Diving at Vobster Quay

APRIL 2017
Safety Guidelines

Dusk diving can be a lot of fun providing you follow some common-sense advice...
  • Get trained - considering signing up for a PADI Night Diver Specialty course
  • Always carry a primary torch with fresh batteries
  • Always carry a reliable backup torch
  • Do not dazzle other divers with your torch beam!
  • Use glowsticks or a strobe to aid buddy contact
  • Go slow and stay close to avoid buddy separation
  • Stay shallow - there's no reason to go deep!
PLEASE NOTE: Our final evening dive of 2016 will be on 27th October. After this date, we revert to winter opening times.

Can you feel it? Yes folks, Spring is definitely in the air (well, sort of) and that can mean only one thing - it's time to grab your gear and head down to Vobster for a cheeky Thursday evening dip...

With the winter hopefully well and truly behind us, we celebrate the return of those long, warm(ish) Summer evenings with a welcome change to our regular opening hours. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Vobster Quay is pleased to offer divers and swimmers alike the opportunity to take advantage of the longer, lighter evenings that British Summer Time brings with our late Thursday evening opening hours.

Starting from April 2017 and running until the end of October, we'll be keeping the gates open between 5:00pm and 9:30pm (exit the water by 9:00pm) for those who fancy a cheeky post-work dive or swim. It's the perfect opportunity to take a break from the working week so why not join us?

The first evening dive for the 2017 season will be announced shortly and with the sun pre-booked to dip below the horizon at shortly after 6:30pm (the lengths we go to, eh!), it's a great chance to snag a genuine dusk dive opportunity and who doesn't love a dusk dive? With the lake cloaked in darkness, it's like a whole new dive - just don't forget your torch!

Great for dive schools...

Our Thursday late opening hours are great for dive schools and clubs too. Whether you want to run a night dive specialty or simply get your club members in the water ready for the start of the new dive season, our Thursday evening late opening hours give you plenty of time to get some worthwhile training in.

Don't forget our special instructor deal - for every four students you bring along, one instructor gets in free! You can carry students across from previous visits too! Visit our For Dive Schools page for more information.

Discounted Entry...

As if the thought of being able to get a mid-week dive in isn't enough, we've made the deal even sweeter - arrive after 5:00pm and divers can take advantage of our discounted entry fees...

Evening Diver £ 9.00 £ 7.50
Evening Swimmer £ 7.50 £ 5.00

Training Opportunities...

PADI Night Diver
DURATION: One evening with three open water dives
COST: £190
The PADI Night Diver speciality course is your introduction to a whole new way of diving, giving you the knowledge and skills to safely and competently conduct night dives with just a torch and your new found skills to guide you.

You'll learn how to competently plan a night dive and further develop your navigation skills to allow you to find your way around under water without the aid of natural light. You'll also learn all about the specialist equipment needed to conduct night dives with particular attention given to the different types of torch available to the budding night diver. You and your buddy will learn how to communicate underwater and how to effectively deal with the hazards that can be potentially encountered on a night diving.

Through a combination of home study and knowledge review, the PADI Night Diver specialty course involves minimal classroom work with the emphasis placed firmly on practical learning! Over the course of three dives, you'll learn how to safely plan and conduct night dives as you develop your knowledge and experience under the watchful eye of your PADI instructor.

Congratulations to Karlos Moodster for the successful completion of his PADI Advanced Open Water, Enriched Air and SMB Diver courses. He is now ready to tackle the briskest of British diving conditions in safety and style, whilst having a jolly good time too, it would seem.

Safe adventuring to you all. Hugo

It's been a while, so here is the 'post beast' outlook.

First, the easy bit - it is just over 6 degrees throughout the lake, at all depths. Take a degree off if you wear a Suunto.

Second, viz - it was poor in the shallows last weekend (premature mussel spawning),... [more]
