Vobster Quay runs weekends sea diving too - this one is Plymouth wreck based (which wrecks depends on weather) and is perfect for those wanting an organised weekend, with a bit of holiday repping by Hugo. Limited places, but a great price for diving and accomodation.

Don't miss out, places go quickly, so call us to book. Cheers, Tim

WINTER: TIME FOR DREAMS AND
MEMORIES. HUGO DIVES MALIN: PT2.
POSTED: 02nd February 2018

........ I am bout half way through my planned bottom time and I decide that the time has come for my moment at the bow. The distant sound of subsea hammering has disappeared and I assume, correctly, that the other divers have begun their journey to the surface. I make my way up the port side of the wreck and my thoughts turn to those individuals who know this ship in her previous life, especially those who bore witness to the onslaught of 6 torpedo strikes, from two separate U-boats, which eventually caused her sinking. As I move foreward, her bow begins to take its breath taking form. There is a gentle tide running towards the bow from the starboard side, so I scooter past the bow, turn back towards her and then gaze on in serene wonder at one of the greatest sights in diving. The experience surpasses even my wildest reveries. A large school of bib surround the line of the stem and they flow liquid-smooth around the wreck, as I drift towards her. My eyes are pinned wide open, trying to drink in all the details of this fleeting moment. I focus on the remaining intact piece of bow railing, covered with plumose anemones, savouring the achievement of being here at all. Then I float over the bow and take in the winches and warp, before finding myself back at the shot-line, with only a few minutes of bottom time remaining. As I collect my strobe, I take one last look around and enjoy a little internal smile; I made it. The moment of triumph is brief, as I still have over two hours of ascent time until I can surface safely and over three hours of rough seas to endure before I am back on solid ground.

It has taken nearly three years of dedicated training, total commitment and no small amount discomfort to get here. I have been granted an audience with a unique environment, which only a privileged few are lucky enough to enjoy. Through thorough planning, hard work and with the guidance of some of the finest mentors in adventure training, I have been fortunate enough to dive The SS Justicia and return to tell the tale. I would like to thank Donald Cullen and the crew of the MV Laura Deane for their outstanding support and assistance, without which none of this adventure would have been possible; special thanks to Peter McCamley for running the trip and Dave Gration for inviting me in the first place; and thank you to all those who have contributed to my training over the years and all those who have supported, encouraged or otherwise tolerated my obsession; I am indebted to you all.
